Paketa Magnesium Bikes
NAHBS Booth: #534 & 536
best alternative material 2012 paketa v2r magnesium tandem

Best in Show:  We are proud to announce that the 2012 V2r with our new straight 44mm headtube, and Di2 internal routing won Best in Show for the Alternative Frame Material category at the 2012 North American Handmade Bicycle Show. We were up against some beautiful bamboo, aluminum, and wooden bikes, and we are honored to accept this award. The NAHBS show was a great success for us, and we are grateful to everyone that stopped by to check out our bikes. We will be presenting some new designs at NAHBS 2013, which will be right here in Denver, Colorado on February 22-24, 2013.

About Paketa: Paketa Custom Bikes was founded on the idea of creating bikes that are light, stiff, strong, and ride better than any other bike on the market. That remains our number one priority today, 11 years later. Over those 11 years, we have tested and improved our bikes into the most finely tuned performance bicycles in the world. The custom tube options we have made specifically for us allow Jp to truly design and build each frame to the specific rider. Every Paketa frame is built completely custom with custom tube-sets and custom geometry.

About Magnesium: In order to make high performance bikes that ride better than any other bike on the market, the best materials must also be used. It’s no secret amongst the inner circle of bicycle frame-builders that magnesium would make a great bike frame. It’s the challenges in production of magnesium that have kept most frame-builders on the typical materials like steel, aluminum, carbon, and titanium. It really takes a company that can specialize in magnesium to make it work, and that is exactly what we have done. Every Paketa bike produced today is made out of the AZ61 Magnesium alloy. That means it’s 93% Magnesium, 6% aluminum, and 1% Zinc. We have found this to have the best strength to weight ratio and the best vibration damping abilities of any frame material on the market today. This means that every Paketa bike is light, stiff, strong, and responsive, and it will ride incredibly smooth. When the frame absorbs so much vibration, your body lasts longer and doesn’t fatigue as quickly. That means you have more energy for a longer ride or cranking it into the finish line.

Tandems: Paketa has become known around the world for building the best racing tandems, and we are continuously setting the standards for tandem design. Our famous V2r magnesium racing tandem that won Best Alternative Material in 2012 was the first tandem to use a right side timing belt drive, and it has been winning races all over the world since it’s debut. While performance is our ultimate priority when designing tandems, Paketa tandems are some of the lightest available today. We have built complete tandems at 21 pounds that are stiff, strong, and ride like a dream. For 2013 we have some new tandems that will, no doubt, impress the crowds in Denver (and judges). You’ll have to come to the show and see what we have up our sleeves.

Road Bikes:  Paketa’s custom magnesium road racing bicycle frames are light, stiff, and fast! Aerospace engineering enters into the double-butted, bi-ovalized, and aero-shaped downtubes. Thousands of road kilometers determined Paketa’s exclusive frame geometry, and years of experience have gone into perfecting the proprietary manufacturing processes. All this adds up to one thing: A bicycle frame light enough for the high mountains, aero enough for solo breakaways, and stiff enough for bunch sprints. Throw in the “X”-Factor (magnesium’s unique ability to tame road shock and vibration), and now you’ve got the freshest legs in the peloton! We have three frame models for our line of road bikes, the Rocket, the Rocket Venus, and the Scud. The Rocket is the superlight racing model, the Venus is our women’s specific bike, and the Scud is stiffer and stronger for heavier riders or those looking for a more durable bike. We also make track bikes, TT bikes, cyclocross bikes, and fixies.

Mountain Bikes: The Paketa Wac Corporal is one of the only mountain bikes out there that is truly custom. You can actually customize every aspect of the bike in order to make it perfect for you and the type of rider you are. With custom geometry, this bike is guaranteed to fit perfectly. We can even make the frame lighter or beefier depending on how big you are and how hard you ride. You can also customize your wheelsize for maximum efficiency. Choose between 26″, 650b, or 29″ wheels. The next step is to choose between several drive train types; 3×1 or 3x9speed geared setup, 2×10 or 2x9speed geared, 1×10 or 1×9 geared, Rohloff Hub, singlespeed, or you can even use a Gates Carbon Drive system. Once you have built your dream bike, it’s time to make it look beautiful. We can do one, two, three, and four color fully custom paint jobs. Don’t settle for an off the shelf bike when you can get a fully custom Wac Corporal at a great price.

Exhibitor News:
What a great NAHBS this was!:

I can’t say enough about the tremendous show that was hosted in Denver last weekend. The 2013 North American Handmade Bicycle was a huge success. The people of Denver came out in full force to show their love of cycling. We are proud to be a part of the Denver cycling community. We were also impressed with how many people traveled from all over the US and all over the world to come to the show.

Thank you to every person that stopped to chat with us about our bikes. We love showing off our amazing rides, and we hope you keep in touch with us. We also want to thank the event organizers for doing such a great job and driving a big crowd.

The Bikes we showcased at the North American Handmade Bicycle show this year in Denver:

1. D2r Magnesium tandem bike with two couplings for easy travel. The D2r was shown with a right-side Gates timing belt and a compact crankset. We also showcased our new finish option, which is a nano particulate ceramic coating. Ceramikoat is extremely hard and scratch resistant, and also very thin. We had the insides of the frame and BB shell coated for extra protection. We chose a matte finish for the show bike, and I have to say that the matte finish from Ceramikoat is extremely smooth and continuous. It looks much better than a matte finish powder coat. This incredibly versatile tandem weighed in at 22.5 lbs for the show.

2. WAC Corporal 29er:  A mountain bike with a double/double belt drive. This bike simply rocks. It’s a single speed, but with more versatility so you aren’t always stuck with one gear. And you still get to use the Gates belt drive. The rear wheel simply drops out and you can switch the belt manually to a different combination of sprockets. Switching the belt takes less than a minute, and you don’t get your hands greasy. This 29er weighed in at 22lbs for the show.

3. 18th Street Scorcher: This super fast singlespeed tandem was displayed with no chains. Adhering to the Gates philosophy, we used a belt for the drive and also for the timing. It rides so quiet and clean. The most unique thing is that we built the bike to allow the drive and timing belts to both be mounted to the right side, allowing the use of any crankset.

4. Scud All-road bike: The Scud road bike we presented at NAHBS is a slick looking bike. It’s matte black finish mates perfectly with the finish of the ENVE carbon fork, rims, handlebar, stem, and seatpost. JP built this bike with Campy Record EPS, and did a fabulous job of concealing the wires. The bike also featured Hayes road disc brakes, and the entire brake line was routed inside the frame, leaving no cable clutter on the bike.

5. V2 Time Trial Tandem: The V2 time trial tandem is a speed machine. I can’t keep track of the number of people who have won races on this setup. Everyone at the show loved the Sweet Wings titanium tandem cranks that are on this bike too. What a great touch.

6. D2r Tandem with four couplings: This bike is a sight to behold. It’s flashy paint job really brought a lot of attention at the show. The frame is powder coated with a super chrome base coat, then Lollipop Berry faded to Ink black with a clear vision top coat. It has matching pink American Classic 420 Aero wheels, metallic pink bottle cages, and some other pink flare parts that really bring it all together.

Come see the only Magnesium bikes at NAHBS:
Come visit Paketa at booth 536 and see the only magnesium bikes at NAHBS. Magnesium bikes are very light, which you will quickly find out when you pick up our 22.5 lb D2r travel tandem. Magnesium is also stiff and responsive and has excellent power transfer. The most incredible quality of Magnesium is the ride quality. The material absorbs shock better than any other bicycle frame material, making a Paketa bike very comfortable to ride.
See a 22.5lb travel tandem at Paketa booth 536:
Come down and see the world’s lightest travel tandem at the Paketa booth. This two coupling take-apart tandem fits into a single bike case. We have the case on display also.
Paketa’s new stealth internal routing:

Internal routing for electronic shifting can be added to any of our tandems or single bikes. We can set up bikes for seatpost-installed battery packs and internal brake lines for a clean look. Come to the North American Bicycle Show and visit us at booth 534/536 to see our unique All-road bike, the Scud, with fully internal cables and brake lines. This bike has Campy Super Record EPS components, disc brakes, and a tapered fork.

World’s lightest travel tandems!:

Paketa Magnesium Bikes will be showcasing the world’s lightest travel tandems at this year’s North American Handmade Bicycle Show. We will be displaying two D2r travel tandems. One with two couplings and one with four couplings. Whether you choose a 2-coupling or 4-coupling frame depends on how–and how often–you travel with your bike. The 4-coupling version fits into two cases small enough to fit into tight spaces, while the 2-coupling versions pack into a standard-size single bike travel case. The titanium S&S couplings are exclusive to Paketa and are as good looking as they are functional.

Available frame finishes include durable powder coat in over 7000 colors (including multi-colored fades) and nano-particulate ceramic coating that’s nearly as hard as diamond for superb scratch protection, while still being flexible enough to resist chips and withstand minor dents–in other words, the perfect enticement to leave home for cycling adventures far and wide.

At Paketa, we’ve listened to our customers who’ve raved about the performance advantages of our right-side-timing V2r/D2r models but want lower gearing, especially in a travel bike. So, for NAHBS 2013 our ceramic-coated D2r also includes compact gearing, making a low gear of 25 inches (0.94:1 ratio) possible with an 11-36 cassette. All that in a bike weighing only 22.5 pounds (10.2 kg) with a packed weight in the optional Biknd Helium case of 44 lbs. (20 kg)–enough lighter than the airline weight limit of 50 lbs. to allow packing some helmets, shoes, or other accessories in the same case.

Exhibitor Products:
See some unique belt-drive bikes at Paketa:
Come by the Paketa booth number 536 to see some really unique bikes with Gates Belt-Drives. We are displaying a mountain bike with a double-double belt-drive and a singlespeed tandem “scorcher” with the drive belt and the timing belt mounted on the right side.  We also have a D2r travel tandem with right-side timing belt and a time trial tandem with a Gates Timing Belt.

We just completed and delivered our first two-coupling version of the new D2 custom magnesium travel tandem. With two S&S couplings, this super light weight tandem fits in a standard single bike case and weighs in at less than 50 pounds with the case. The bike itself, weighed in at 24.7 pounds with a wide-range triple gearing (30/42/55 & 11-30 Recon Ti cassette), Campy 10s shifters/derailleurs, FSA carbon bars and seat posts, San Marco SLR Flow saddles, Ritchey WCS captain & Zona carbon adjustable stoker stems, Lightning tandem cranks with left side Gates Carbon Drive timing belt, Campy Super Record dual-pivot f/r brake calipers, American Classic 420 Aero 3 wheels with Conti 25 mm Gatorskins.

The two-coupler option is a great option for airline travel as you will only be charged as if it were a single bike. The four coupler tandem fits in two separate S&S travel cases, and travels on airlines at no additional charge. The two coupling option is also great for carrying the tandem on a rear-mounted car rack or for carrying on a roof rack. The convenience of breaking the bike in half can also help with storing the bike at home. The possibilities are endless…..

Here is a little sneak peak of our new custom Paketa Scud magnesium road bike frame with internal routing for Di2 and Hydraulic road disc brakes. This bike is built with our incredibly versatile 44/44 mm headtube, which allows the use of 1.5″ and 1.25″ tapered steer tubes or internally mounted headset cups. Adjustable rake headsets are also a possibility. With all of these updated features, the ride quality and lightness of the magnesium frame, and custom geometry; there is really no bike out there that competes with the new Scud from Paketa. You can visit us at NAHBS, the North American Handmade Bicycle Show in February to see this bike in person. We will also post photos of the bike once we get it built up. It should look pretty slick with the Enve carbon fork with matching finish.

The long wait is over: an S&S coupled version of the venerable Paketa magnesium V2 and V2r tandems are now available!! Why is the V2r the absolute best racing tandem on the market? To start, the V2r is the lightest, stiffest, and smoothest riding tandem in the world. It’s unique design allows for the transfer belt drive to be mounted on the right side, making it extremely versatile with modern components. Crossover drive left-side transfer chains (or belts, more recently) are the product of bicycle evolution, which graduated from single drive chain rings to double, and then triple, chain rings for the main drive to provide wide-range gearing for a variety of riding conditions. Triple chain rings take up so much space on the right side that there’s no room left for the transfer ‘rings or sprockets; hence, designers moved the transfer drive to the left side where space was plentiful. But, with that comes several inherent disadvantages. Click here for more information about the V2r and the advantages of the right side timing belt.

Award Entries:
Paketa D2r Magnesium Tandem with S and S couplings (Entry for: Best tandem bike):
The Paketa D2 (left-side timing) and D2r (right-side timing) tandems are the lightest, highest-performance, and most durable travel tandems in the world. The D2/D2r models can be built with either 2 or 4 couplings. Whether you choose a 2-coupling or 4-coupling frame depends on how--and how often--you travel with your bike. The 4-coupling versions fit into two cases small enough to fit into tight spaces, while the 2-coupling versions pack into a standard-size single bike travel case. The titanium S and S couplings are made exclusively for Paketa and are as beautiful as they are functional.

The 2013 NAHBS D2r show bike is coated with Ceramikoat, a nano-particulate ceramic coating that's nearly as hard as diamond for superb scratch protection, while still being flexible enough to resist chips and withstand minor dents--in other words, the perfect enticement to leave home for cycling adventures far and wide. Available frame finishes include Ceramikoat or a durable powder coat in over 7000 colors, including multi-colored fades, metallics, and special effects.

At Paketa, we've listened to our customers who've raved about the performance advantages of our right-side-timing V2r/D2r models but want lower gearing, especially in a travel bike. So, for NAHBS 2013 our ceramic-coated D2r also includes compact gearing with a Gates timing belt drive, making a low gear of 25 inches (0.97:1 ratio) possible with an 11-36 cassette. We have a proprietary adapter, designed and built in-house, that converts the 130 BCD Gates CarbonDrive sprocket to the 110 BCD crank spider. Combined with our exclusive inboard-mounted timing belt, the result is a travel tandem weighing under 23 lbs. with a packed weight in the optional Biknd Helium case of under 45 lbs.--enough lighter than the airline weight limit of 50 lbs. to allow packing helmets, shoes, or other accessories in the same case.

About the custom S&S Couplings:

The design philosophy for our S&S-coupled tandems is simple: no compromise! We've stuck with our standard, oversized magnesium tubing to ensure that the all of the stiffness, responsiveness, and exceptionally smooth ride of the V2/V2r is preserved, while keeping the weight low and durability high. In order to realize this, we've specified custom-sized titanium S and S couplings, and the engineers at S and S have come through brilliantly with a novel concept aesthetically integrated with the frame profile while providing all of the strength and durability S and S are known for. The exclusive design incorporates several unique features that reduce the size and weight while ensuring your bike will deliver many years of service. Time to book that trip to the farthest reaches of the globe and take off!
Paketa Scud Magnesium road bike with Campy EPS and Disc brakes (Entry for: Best alternative material (bamboo, aluminum, wood, magnesium, etc.)):
The Scud is the most versatile road bike we make. The Scud on display this year at NAHBS is showcasing some of our newest features including the oversized 44mm straight head tube, road disc brakes, Campagnolo EPS electronic shifting with internal routing, and stealth brake line routing for a clean, no-cable look for the frame. All Paketa bikes can be made with these cool features. We designed this bike to be a fast racing machine for larger riders as well as a smooth and durable ride for expert recreational cyclists. The Scud takes all of the great characteristics of the Rocket to the next level. The beefier ovalized downtube and top tube create more lateral and torsional stiffness and increases the durability of the front end. The large oval seatstays and chainstays strengthen and stiffen the rear end, and the sweeping chainstay design helps to provide more damping in the rear of the bike. The added stiffness and damping help to keep you in control in fast tight turns, so you can always cut to the inside and take the straightaway. Magnesium's unique vibration damping ability is multiplied with the Scud due to the extra material. That means you get an even stiffer frame than the Rocket with a smoother ride.

There is a small amount of weight gain with the added material, but a frame still weigh's in under 4lbs. If you are looking for a light and fast bike with an amazing ride, the Scud will not only surprise you, it will impress you and everyone that sees your bike. Order yours today and see why Paketa makes the best bikes in the world.

This year's show bike is outfitted with a complete Enve carbon fiber cockpit, Hayes road disc brakes, and Enve Carbon tubular rims.
